[RP] keyboard switcher

Hello:

I've just installed a recent Ubuntu + RP combination. There's one
rather tedious XKB-related keybinding that I haven't been able to get
rid of: Control+Space is set up to switch my keyboard layout. Since
that key combo is useful for Emacs, I don't really want to have it
taken over before it gets to Emacs.

I'm not sure if Ratpoison itself sees the keypress... but it would be
nice to know if others have seen and possibly overcome a similar
issue. I've tried the suggestions here
http://askubuntu.com/questions/504019/where-to-change-default-superspace-keyboard-switch-key-by-a-terminal
to no avail.

The keyboard switch action is accompanied by a little graphical
display that toggles between English (Dvorak) and English (US). I've
done everything I can think of to disable the English (US) layout, so
I'm not sure why it's even available as an option to switch to!

Some further technical details:

Running

$ xkbevd -synch

I see output like this when the key combo is pressed:

XkbNewKeyboard event, serial 36, synthetic no, device 3, time 2817917,
