Yes, that's the issue.  Running ibus-prefs (or whatever it is called, not near my box for a bit) let's you fix the problem.  It's not related to rp.

I think I figured it out!  Things are now working, anyway.  I think the main issue is that something called "ibus" was checked under the Unity prefs.

Anyway, keyboard stuff seems to be sorted out for now.
