If you install the necessary library dependencies to build the
gtk frontend you can see if that will work better. (Tell
configure --enable-gtk and it will either build it or complain
if the necessary dependencies are missing. Then gtk should
be the default front end if you don't ask for another one
on the QEMU command line.)

I recompiled the latest QEMU version with "--enable-gtk" : my guest is now 
launched in a window with a "menu" with "Machine" and "View" entries above but 
I still have the same black screen issue and I can't switch to QEMU monitor 
window anymore (ctrl-alt-2 does not work)... So I can't really check is it's 
still a refresh issue.

I also tried to redirect console in graphic window and not in stdio/ttyAMA0 and 
the last line I see (stucked around 10s perhaps) before window goes black is : 
"Console: switching to color frame buffer 80x30" Does it rings a bell to you ?
