How did you know to do the "-j8" option with make? Maybe that's the secret. 
I'll have to try that.

-j is the amount of individual compilation tasks to performance at a time. in other words, the amount of parallelism to use during the build. i used 8 since i have a machine with 8 'cores.'

i've done essentially what you've described and i've had success in the past.
