[Plex86-devel] Windows 98, bochs, plex86 - what I have working.

Hello all,

I started experimenting with bochs and plex86 this week.  I've had
some success getting a Windows 98 running under bochs (yes, it took
a VERY long time to do the Windows 98 install).  I can get my
bochs Win98 to boot in safe mode under plex86.

I'm running Redhat 7.2 on a PII 400, GCC 2.95.3 that I built
using Gcc 3.0 I found on the web (2.96 seems to cause so many
problems)

Unfortunately I didn't keep great notes on my failures, so I'm not all
that sure that one needs to be set up as I currently am to get it done.

bochs-1.4.1
./configure --with-gui=sdl

Used bximage to create a 600MB image file.
Booted bochs from a Windows 98 startup disk I created on a Win98  
box.  Option "start computer with CDROM support".
Fdisk and format C:
Did the installation with the "most common components".
Bochs chugged along fine - did all of the plug and play detection.
I can now boot into win98 via bochs and work VERY slowly.
I installed TweakGUI on Win98 under bochs, and used it to set win98
to alway give me the boot menu - very handy.

Copied the disk image to cdrom for safe keeping, and started
working with plex98.
Got the latest plex98 from cvs,
./configure
make

Copied ./conf/win95 to /conf/win98

Pointed at my 600MB disk image.
one other change -
# number of megabytes for vm
memory = 32

First attempt to boot in "normal mode",
Plex86 display's the splash screen. but plex86 dies trying
to detect my monitor.

Next attempt - boot in "safe mode":
I load Windows 98 all the way (in 16 color vga mode or course).

Next attempt - boot in normal mode again:

::plex86 panic:
::retnear_iw: EIP > limit
Fatal monitor error caused Panic

Suggestions?

I'm grabbing some screen shots (And I should put them where?).
