Yes you're right. I forgot since I've never encountered a gcc installation
where /usr/local/lib is not in the search path. Even RedHat which never had
it in ld.so.conf has it in the gcc search path.
Adding /usr/local/lib to the Makefiles shouldn't be a problem, just unusual.
