Hi,
I am new to Linux and want to use it to learn Assembly.  I am learning
programming through reading "Programming from the Ground Up" by Jonathan
Bartlett who recommends  an x86 GNU/Linux distribution.  I want to have
the option of running Win8 or Linux but Win 8 security is against dual
booting non - Win OS's.  Can you pse advise how I could solve this
install problem?

An option is to install Oracle VirtualBox, which is an open source software that installs on Windows (https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Downloads).
I have installed it on Windows 7 and then I installed a convenient Ubuntu image to try out all the examples in the book. It works nicely. You don't need dual boot at all; VirtualBox installs/runs as an application on Windows host OS and runs Ubuntu/Linux as a virtualized guest OS.

Hope that helps.

You should be able to install openSUSE 12.3 and Ubuntu 13.04 with Windows 8.  I have managed to do just that.  You may want to just boot their live distro to check them out first.  I do not believe the live distro's have binutils which contains the program "as" that you would probably want to use to assemble the examples in the book.  Also you may need to change your bios settings to legacy to boot from the live cd.

You can find out more and get a lot of help from the following links and the forums that are available their.

http://www.opensuse.org

http://www.ubuntu.com

Back up our original Windows 8 install so you can restore your computer if necessary before you try to install any of the distro's.  If you are willing to persevere, you will find it very rewarding.

Good luck,

Eric
