I've only had this problem with Xbee Pro 868Mhz modules. 
From the datasheet for the 9Extends:
"Continuous RF data stream up to 115,200 bps"

The 9Extends have a 100% duty cycle, so there is no problem. 

Most of the Digi stuff does, and I assumed the 868's would as well.  The 
moral of the story is read the datasheet before getting all excited.
(I'm also now extremely jealous of those of you who can use 900MHz kit).
