But that's what I was suggesting: there *is* a compelling reason to
merge, in general, and if you want to avoid merging, then that
probably indicates you want to branch.

The repository on venge.net occasionally has unmerged heads on the
net.venge.monotone branch, but they rarely seem to last as long as a
day (the branch was unmerged at one point today, for example, but now
it's been merged).  

And that's probably because they're very visible and irritating: you
do "monotone update" and it won't.  

I haven't tried, but I presume attempts to propagate to or from an
unmerged branch will also fail.
