The most likely answer is DHCP.  There is a module for this in lwip.  It 
will work if the network at the other end of the line provides this 
service. 

My knowledge of the details of using DHCP relate to now obsolete 
revisions of lwIP.  Your best bet for that would be to find an example 
for the revision that you are using.  It has always been pretty easy, 
though, so I don't think you will have any problems.
