Ah, sorry, the script is in <lilypond>/scripts/build, so you should
say

  perl /path/to/lilypond/src/directory/scripts/build/mf2pt1.pl ...

Yes, what mf2pt1 produces shows the exact outlines of the font.  This
is always good to have for checking IMHO.
