480x480 at 29.97fps is ok for NTSC, but for PAL you have to use 480x576 25fps.

anyway you can use other resolutions than theese two, but then
you leave the SVCD standard and will have a XSVCD, which probably
no DVD player might play ;)

I've tried some non-standard resolution on my AVPhile 715. I tried to do 720x480 for SVCD. It played but the video was awful--very garbled and completely unwatchable.
