It seems to me I should be the one thanking you for your help & your
work.  In case it helps, here's the (minimal, I made no effort to do it
the right way) diff I use right now:

tramp.el.orig comes from ubuntu's emacs23-el package (versionned
23.1+1-4ubuntu3.1) -- tramp-version says 2.1.15.
