Hi Axel Thanks for your feedback. I did check the VirtualBox forum, and although I didn't know exactly what I was doing I made a lucky punch. To make a long story short: If you are running a 64 bit machine but only get 32 bit operating systems as a choice when setting up the virtual machine, then you should read this: https://forums.virtualbox.org/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=62339#p291404 In my case there was a conflict between VirtualBox and my anti-virus software (Avast, but other manufacturers may have the same issue). I had to turn off the anti-virus software once during the setup of the virtual machine to be able to choose "openSuse (64 bit)", and then everything went fine. (I don't have to disable the anti-virus software anymore when booting or running the virtual machine.) I hope this helps others with similar problems as well. Happy holidays!
