Werner mentioned GNU tbl's "nospaces" global option.  Very convenient!

One nit: It seem to work for one end only, i.e., it lets me insert
optional space between a tab and a following T{.  It doesn't allow
optional space to be placed between T} and a following tab.  

It's not a big deal, but the gtbl manpage does mention that "nospaces"
will "ignore both leading and trailing spaces in data items."
