His fame is just beginning and will be lifelong.
If anyone does not like the way Linux is going, they are at liberty to
'fork' Linux using the existing code base and compete with Linux (but
cannot commercialise their fork). There is no sign of this happening any
time now.
The nearest competing thing to Linux in the Open Source world is the HURD
development. While this alternative operating system is in theory more
elegant than Linux, there seem to be many practical difficulties to
overcome.
