Most code (no qualification necessary) sucks.
AFAICT free software (or anything exposed for long enough in the "open
source" sun) is generally WAY better than any "professional" code
written as part of proprietary products.
Just look at the Windows headers for a start; that should give you a
clue. I have no doubt the actual code is worse.

Oh no, you don't want to do that. The worst of the worst code I've ever
come across tends to have been written by engineers. In contrast to CS
types, they likely never learned about software architecture,
maintainability (you only need to build a bridge once, normally),
portability or more "advanced" topics like reentrancy and object
orientation.

After seeing too many engineers wreak their havoc on code, I'd rather
take my chances with code written by self-taught artists, thank you.
