The band name came from "devolution"; they celebrated our bright new
de-evolved future.... :-o

I think "Whip it!" was one of their biggest hits (the only one I ever
saw on MTV).  Some other songs I think were popular were "Mongoloid",
"Beautiful World", etc.

That's pretty good.  I like the term because I like the band -- but your
statement mirrors one of the biggest reasons I like them.  They were
always silly, sarcastic, and very self-aware, but didn't wallow in it in
the self-satisfied way some bands do ("I'm so clever!").  Purportedly
before becoming a band they were all accountants from Akron Ohio (I
don't know if that's actually true)... :-)
