Hi Miles!

I'd think such auto-detection, while convenient, would work best among
the sort of community that's small enough so that it's not strictly
necessary.
I think there's some tipping point: you can comfortably do manual
registration of some known public archive for scales of up to a couple
of dozen people. At the scale of a major conference, however, that
becomes problematic and DNS-SD/mDNS become very helpful. On the other
hand, mDNS certainly doesn't scale beyond the local link. So we'd
really need to see DNS-SD support in unicast DNS, which involves
dynamic DNS updating, which introduces authentication issues... I agree
that we should leave those aside for now, but that still leaves the
entirety of the local link, and that still seems like it could be
profitably pursued to me.
Hmmm, how about this:
rm -rf ~/.arch-params/=locations
ln -s /nfs-mounted-global-dir ~/.arch-params/=locations
Now whenever someone does `tla make-archive' or `tla register-archive',
everybody can see the change... :-)
Yes, as long as people know about the NFS mount, make a new archive
there, don't forget to branch before they leave, etc. All of these
suggestions are the kinds of suggestions that make sense when you do
NOT have a "global distributed namespace." They make a lot less sense
when you do.
