Actually, *tla with sftp* requires a specific version. I thinks it's 2.
The reason has been posted here in the past - the subsystem changes
slightly I think.
So, while sftp will work with both protocols, it's a known limitation of
arch that it won't. How to fix? grab the source, test and patch.
Finally, to answer the question, you can set the protocol via the
~/.ssh/config file (a Host section), or the environment.
