does the syslog show something related to USB?

this isn't a configuration for gnokii's smsd

libgnoki talking to an emulated serial device doesn't need to know if
it's USB, Bluetooth or whatever, so if the USB devices disappears
there's nothing smsd can do but instead of running it directly, can
you wrap it in a script that calls usb_modeswitch in case of error?
Something like
while true
smsd ... || usb_modeswitch ...
sleep ...

D'oh, sorry.  Wrong smsd config file (tried a lot of software before finding gnokii).

No USB or any other related messages appear anywhere in any log file or on the console.

Unfortunately, when it stops working a power cycle of the USB modem is required.  Simply re-running usb_modeswitch doesn't help.

I'm leaning towards a USB issue.  Could be the device itself, but it's brand new and seems to work fine on a PC.
