Actually this was precisely the problem I have been chasing
(see http://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=52538)
What I discovered was that the wrong font is being displayed AS WELL AS the
spacing problem.
I can't believe that unziping the directories is the "right" solution - most
of the debian fonts come and remain zipped, and the kde "console" font only
comes already zipped.
