I tried to play a little with this with the results are attached.  Since
I don't have X fonts with diacritics, I used the simple period instead.
It seems that in many cases we can get reasonable results - even with
shin/sin dot.

Dagesh however is something else.  Can we add an option of pixel border
distance in cases we don't want to glue the characters together?
