NeXT's icons weren't photorealistic, they were pixel-painted by hand. They
were high-color with alpha though, so you could use any pixel color you
wanted at any level of transparency. This is why the icons don't look like
those you see elsewhere, and why they are so clear (no blurring from
resizing).
