Yes, the change that prevents debugging was done in March 2005, cf.

I still have no answer from Ken'ichi for the reason.

Good to know, thanks. But this is just a work-around, not a real

You need emacs 21.3 from 2003, I guess, since emacs 22.1 appeared in
2007, after the problematic change.
