various other man-page URL schemes invented by authors over time:

"man:name.section", which is _almost_ compatible with Groff's.

pages that supports "x-man-doc://" as an alias of "x-man-page://".

registered to handle "x-man-page://" URLs (think xdg-open).

having to accommodate. Apologies for any confusion.

Thanks for clarifying this. Nevertheless I don't see macOS freelance
developers and Apple as working completely independently. Except when John
Sculley was in charge, Apple's always been terribly fond of walled gardens.
Walled gardens centralize power. Power implies responsibility (okay, so Jobs,
like Cook and most other chief executives, proved talented at escaping
responsibility
<https://www.cnn.com/2012/04/24/world/europe/uk-phone-hacking/index.html>.

I think the number of URL formats we have to accommodate for man pages should
_drop_, not increase. Hence my simplistic solution in
https://lists.gnu.org/archive/html/groff/2023-02/msg00021.html .

Also, administrivially, this is a wishlist item and nothing to do with
_grotty_; the output driver simply eats whatever the formatter feeds it in
this regard.
