Hi Paul and Ben,

My understanding is that we don't support ACLs at the moment, even if
the underlying operating system does. I don't know about any plans to
change that.

In case of ACL support for Linux I'd be much more comfortable with
waiting till a stable distribution base is out supporting ACLs to see
how this all plays out. As soon as we know exactly what we want to
support and how it is implemented on Linux we might want to talk about
this again.

If distribution vendors want to ship with full ACL support in their
next version immediately I think they'll either have to do it
themselves or use another version of tar that supports ACLs.

I'm not really a friend of supporting unreleased features of an
operating system. If we don't want to wait till we have a stable
Linux with ACL support to look at I think the right way would be to
first start with ACL support on other systems like Solaris and AIX
where it is already stable.

yours,
  gpoul
