Well, that would be a pretty idiotic thing to do, which suggests there
is perhaps a better explanation. The subject of that email became an
identifier in a fairly lengthy exchange with you last month -- I
therefore re-used that subject in the belief that it might be helpful
for you and perhaps others who might want to review our discussion. In
your first reply in our exchange (initially just to comp.text.tex,
IIRC), you instructed me to use "M-x preview-report-bug", which I did,
and of course I did not cut away any useful information and also, in
subsequent messages, I tried to add as much relevant detail as possible.
Apparently retaining the old subject line didn't have the intended
effect. Our exchange on bug-auctex starts here (though one not very
important msg from me appears to be missing):

As you noted in your first reply to me. Removing the old version of
preview-latex and updating to auctex 11.83 was of course the first thing
I tried, as noted in the course of our earlier exchange. The fact that
this did not solve the problem is what made the case particularly
puzzling.

Indeed, though of course I never did that; I was using both an old
version of auctex (11.55) and an old version of preview-latex before I
removed them and upgraded.

As noted, did that, to no avail. I was simply following up here with a
further, possibly helpful data point vis-a-vis our earlier conversation.
