I have solved the problem first reported in the msg below (posted originally to comp.text.tex) by compiling the latest Emacs CVS sources. Since I'm using the same version of auctex/preview-latex and the same gs-related utilities, the problem appears to have something to do with Emacs 22.0.50.x. Note I have seen this problem with preview-latex now in three different versions of Emacs 22.0.50 on two different platforms -- two versions on Mac OS X (Aquamacs Emacs and the DarwinPorts port) and the emacs-devel port on FreeBSD.

Thanks to David Kastrup for the time he put into trying to help me sort this out after I first posted.

Preview has gone south for some reason. It appears to run normally, but
instead of the usual wondrous transformation of code into graphic, I get
exactly ONE preview -- whatever graphic is rendered first in the given
emacs buffer -- and ^C-` reveals the error msg:

  ERROR: Preview: Snippet 1 started.

The auctex option to preview should not be applied manually. If you
see this error message, either you did something too clever, or the
preview Emacs Lisp package something too stupid.

Thing is, I am not explicitly using the auctex option, AFAICS. I load
preview in .emacs with (load "preview-latex.el" nil t t), as suggested
in the preview-latex documentation. And I really don't think I'm dong
anything too clever.

Just in case I'd clobbered preview with some funky preference or
customization choice, I removed everything and my .emacs file except for
basic path and LaTeX info and the load line above. But to no avail.

I have had preview working just fine. The only thing I've done in the
meantime that might be relevant is to try out Aquamacs Emacs, but
nothing in my .emacs is pointing to any part of that installation. I
have also installed a couple of urw fonts and the mathdesign package.

Does anyone have any idea what I broke and how I might fix it? I don't
much relish the thought of writing my semi-techy papers without the
magic of preview.

I'm running GNU Emacs 22.0.50.1 compiled on an Intel iMac via
DarwinPorts (this is the latest version available via DP). I can't find
version info in the preview files, but the copyright line in preview.sty
extends through 2005. I *do* see in the preview-latex docs that, on
non-X11 systems, one ought to be using "at least Emacs 22.1". Could
that alone be the source of the problem? (I'd like to have a look at
the "Prerequisites" page, but the link:

http://www.gnu.org/software/auctex/preview-manual/ auctex.html#Prerequisites

is broken.)

Thanks for any assistance.
