Learning CVS is a good thing. But before learning CVS, there is another skill
that is more important, and that is learning how to use the 'diff' and 'patch'
utilities to create patches and to use these patches. These utilities are
collectively called 'diffutils', and here's the GNU manual for these:
<http://www.gnu.org/software/diffutils/manual/>
CVS also uses the patch concept, so if you understand this part, then it will
help you learning CVS. If you learn how to create patches, then you can
effectively participate and contribute to an open source project, without
having to learn CVS first. ;-)
