Yes. AUCTeX is running.

My "AUCTeX-version" variable has a value of 11.84. I notice on the AUCTeX website that the current version is 11.86. Was the "viewer stuff" updated since 11.84?

But you opened some tex file before, right?  (Just to make sure auctex
is really loaded.)

If yes, that probably means you have some older auctex version.  I think
the whole viewer stuff was revamped lately (lately in emacs terms).
