Thank you. configure no goes smoothly (haven't tried the ogg stuff yet). 
I then modified configure.in so it uses AC_CONFIG_HEADERS but then I get:

[raistlin:~/adonthell] nhesse% make

  automake --gnu  Makefile
configure.in: 14: `automake requires `AM_CONFIG_HEADER', not 
`AC_CONFIG_HEADER'
make: *** [Makefile.in] Error 1
