If you look carefully at the windows binary, you'll notice that all the
DLLs are provided - that is, everything isn't inside the library. This
make sense since most people doesn't have neither SDL, nor Vorbis, and
certainly not Python! :)

We could make static binaries for *nix, as you suggested. But now,
distros package systems can handle dependancies very well, (Debian and
Mandrake at least) so I'd say we shouldn't encourage people to do that.
But that's of course possible.
