I don't think the API is different - just have a look at zlib.h to get
convinced. As for zlib not working as well under Windows, it's used in
products like Explorer and various Windows apps (not GPL, the licence
doesn't prohibit inclusion in proprietary software). Moreover I've
searched the web for problems related to zlib and windows and found
nothing.
