Redhat certainly has influence, but it isn't unilateral.
Mark Mitchell is the maintainer of GCC and he's with Codesourcery LLC.
SuSE employees a number of important contributors to GCC. IBM, Wind
River systems, Apple, have people working on GCC. Several people on
the steering committee are from universities.
