RedHat seems committed to supporting their 2.96. See bug report at
at their site: http://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=18803.
This document, in turn, references
http://www.lwn.net/2000/1005/a/rh-tools.php3, explaining why RedHat has
chosen to continue with 2.96. For my purposes, future compatibility of
source code (reason 3 in the above document), and the forward-looking
view (reason 4), which I find appropriate for the brand-new experimental
system I'm setting up make me feel more like staying with RH's supported
2.96. Going back to 2.95 isn't very appetizing; see
http://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=21720.
Thanks for your help (also the RPM's from Paul Johns).
