Paul already has RPMs for Redhat 6.0, so you might as well install the
latest. Here at the hive, we distribute Debian `slink' binary
packages suitable for use with `apt-get'.¹ I'd say go with one of
those distributions, if only because that's the community supports.
And unless you a person that *wants* to build everything from source,
avoid distributions without package managers, like Slackware.

As a technical matter, NT is much more reliable and agile, in general
and for Swarm.
¹ `apt-get' has the nice feature that it will recursively install or update
all dependent packages straight from the net.
