A workshop on:

                The Simulation of Social Agents:
                Architectures and Institutions

                        CALL FOR PAPERS

                        October 5-7, 2000

Agent simulation is a computational approach to social research that models
multiple decision-making agents in their preferences, interaction and,
where appropriate, cognitive models and learning strategies. Dynamic
heterogeneous agent models of this type have extended and reshaped social
science research. Many approaches contribute to the emergence of agent
simulation, including: 1) complex adaptive systems, 2) evolutionary game
theory, and 3) multiagent systems. Combinations of the first two approaches
have been particularly productive in a variety of areas, and are likely to
contribute to future advances. Multiagent contributions in the areas of
negotiation, coordination and learning are also likely to play a major role
in the emerging research paradigm. Architectures that combine multiple
approaches to agent simulation are thus one focus of the workshop.

The workshop will also focus on applications of agent simulation in various
institutional settings and policy areas. Work in three such areas are
especially invited by the present Call for Papers: 1) the interaction
between norms and legal policies, 2) the forms and consequences of market
deregulation, and 3) efficient resource allocation with private information
&/or limited commitment, and 4) the relationship between agent actions and
emergence of institutions such as family, market and state. Other
innovative research topics are welcomed as well.

Thursday, October 5th tutorials on agent simulation toolkits such as SWARM,
Ascape, Repast and StarLogo will be organized. Conference papers will be
presented on Friday, October 6th and Saturday, October 7th. Authors
interested in presenting a paper should submit an extended abstract of
500-1000 words to:

                address@hidden

Extended abstracts are due September 1st, 2000. Complete papers of
2500-3000 words are due by November 15, 2000, and will be published in a
workshop Proceedings. Format guidelines will be available at the workshop
website at:
