Sorry for the bad Reply-To header, but I wasn't subscribed to the list
when I saw a post that I wanted to reply to.

I don't know if this will appeal to you or even work for you, but I use
ion3, which supports the URGENT hint. When a window sets the URGENT
hint, ion3 changes the color of its title bar and puts an alert on every
workspace.

rxvt-unicode is a terminal emulator that among other things can be made
to set the URGENT hint when the keyboard bell is rung. Setting screen
to use an audible bell and causing your application to ring the bell on
various events gives you notifications of those events through the
window manager.

I use this with irssi (running bitlbee and not), mutt, etc etc, and
couldn't be happier.

Having no experience with ratpoison, I don't know if you'd be able to
get that information into ratpoison's message bar. I suppose you could
write a script or tool that waits forever for URGENT-hinted windows, and
then gets information about them and pushes that into the message bar.

hth,
