Agreed with your reasoning, on both counts.

But at least for me, that's the type of issue that once I become aware of 
it, "all is not right in my world" until I've figured out what's going on 
and either resolved it, or at least know enough about what happened to 
avoid triggering it in the future (or how to work around it if it can't be 
avoided).  So I'd be checking groups on one computer, doing the rsync to 
the other, checking to see that it rsynced as expected, trying pan there, 
then trying the strace option, etc, until I'd figured out why I wasn't 
getting the expected results.

Talking about strace... do you know enough about it and grep to go on what 
I mentioned, or do you want a step-by, or is it simply not important 
enough to you right now to worry about further?  Because like I said, 
these things disturb me as until it's resolved, for all I know we have a 
schroedinbug (wikipedia it if necessary) just triggering, so if you're up 
for trying the strace to see what pan's doing an need help, just say so, 
and I'll do the big writeup, just to try to get to the bottom of it.  But 
of course if it's no big deal for you, I'll just try to stop worrying 
about potential schroedinbugs until they actually become such. I can't 
track 'em all, obviously.  =:^(
