what you are saying makes sense i guess, but do you subscribe to many binary ng's?

this might be catch22. i've found if i have a small cache i'm continually downloading all available headers everytime i load a newsgroup and then theres also the time waster of having to re-download any binary attachments i may have been downloading the last time i had to kill it.

and its too easy to lose a thread with a small cache.

but its probably worth fine tuning.

Are you sure pan is using all this ram and swap, and not just dealing with that insane amount of cached data you have laying around? I leave mine at 10mb, and have it deleted on exiting pan. Pan never eats up tons of ram, never swaps out. I've got
512mb now but even on my retired system with 128mb, pan was fine and never
swapped out on large groups.
