neither works even with further simplification: i think it needs awk.
as i said, i'm not interested in practising sed/awk at the moment.

but the place for it is in Lynx documentation:
maybe your message could be added to Users Guide with a bit of editing?
however, i do not accept (1) that Lynx has to give up on table support
or (2) that Joe User out there has to learn the intricacies you learnt
in order to be able to read ordinary numeric-type tables,
even when they have been HTML'd by some bad utility.
Lynx has to continue to try to function in the real messy world
or its shelf-life will be very limited.
