 Why not make the front page readable my almost all versions of Lynx, and 
have links to the various help pages..or does this clutter the main page 
too much?

Lynx is a full-featured character-mode browser for the World Wide Web.

 If I'm a new person to this stuff, my first reaction is "Huh?!".  Might I 
suggest that that page be geared a little lower at some point? (Yeah, I 
know its new, but whoa..if a new user saw that..) Perhaps something like:

Lynx is a fully fledged text-based World Wide Web browser.
