Hi Lysle,

You can work-around CVS's limitation by also adding a .keepme or similar 
file (it allows empty files) within the directory you want under the 
merge area.

You can also achieve the same result by adding some code into a rc.local 
file in your merge area (my preferred option).

Note: keep your merge area to the absolute minimum you can get away to 
avoid incompatibilities building up.
