LGTM in principle, but expect to spend a lot of time figuring out how to
deal with all the existing cases where we have tweaked alignment to the
zero-width paper columns.
The commit message makes sense as well, but talks mostly about the
background, and only hints at the solution, asi if it were a teaser
introduction to a novel.
Probably better to spoil the plot and say
"Give PaperColumn a default extent ...
that matches that of a typical note-head, so that alignment to
PaperColumns acts more like alignment to the neighboring note columns"
