Not a solution, but a tentative explanation: since Emacs
doesn't really crash (does it?). I have observed this to
hapen quite frequently when editting over ssh sessions
tunneled through a firewall. Maximum inactivity period
passes, link falls down and there you have it.

Might suggest a way to solve things (use tramp or keep
your local tree locally or what not).

This is probably a large source of it, since almost everything we do is over ssh through a firewall.

Unfortunately, neither of those solutions makes any sense for us.
