You can also limit updates to only those archives which have changes. Some archives will go through rotation and others just won't be changed very frequently.

The update process itself shouldn't cost much more than a replay. It knows what patches have been applied, and what patches need to be applied. It's a few readdirs to get the current patch list per branch to see if there are any new ones.

There's no reason for it to be anywhere nearly as expensive as expensive as a full-tree find.
