OMG!  So, so sorry...I was of course being very, very stupid.  Sorry for
generating junk.

P.S.
The problem was that my tests/.arch-inventory contained the following
line:
        junk ^regex|pbitops|testsuite\.log$
instead of
        junk ^(regex|pbitops|testsuite\.log)$
which just proves I should really be going to bed now...
