eh, that's what matters isn't it, if it contains In-Reply-To and
References headers, which it will if you respond to a thread from a
competent mua.  thankfully mutt can now break threading as well as
patch it back up again, but i shouldn't have to weed through mailing
list threads for stuff like this.
