This has come up several times in the Playstation2-linux newsgroups,
where the proprietary RTE on CD 1 is essential to boot the GPL'd system
(on the user's hard drive, but originally on CD 2).
After an initial period when it looked like Sony appeared just to say
'tuff, buy another kit' to those whose RTE-disks went down, they seem to
have settled into a fairly standard replacement policy.
